  5. Moving a seminary: A personal recollection part 1: The manly story.Brian Lucas - 2019 - The Australasian Catholic Record 96 (2):190.
A future biographer of Cardinal Edward Clancy, Archbishop of Sydney from 1983 to 2001, will no doubt give some attention to his major property developments. These included the complete rebuilding of the school and presbytery at St Mary's Cathedral, restoration works at, and the completion of, the cathedral with the southern spires, and the renovation and redevelopment of the parish site at St Patrick's, Church Hill.

  6. Moving a seminary: A personal recollection part 2: The Strathfield/Homebush story.Brian Lucas - 2019 - The Australasian Catholic Record 96 (3):333.
The Seminary of the Good Shepherd commenced at Homebush in 1996, following the closure of St Patrick's College at the end of 1995. In his quinquennial report for the years 1993-98, Cardinal Clancy made some comments on the move. He explained that the transition from one site to another provided a unique opportunity to examine past traditions. The timing coincided with the decision of the Holy See to commission a general review of seminaries, and that was undertaken by Bishop (...)

    Elias and the counter-ego: personal recollections.Stephen Mennell - 2006 - History of the Human Sciences 19 (2):73-91.
Norbert Elias (1897–1990) achieved international recognition as a major sociologist only towards the end of his long life. As a German Jewish refugee in England, he did not even gain a secure academic post (at the University of Leicester) until he was 57. Apart from his magnum opus, Über den Prozess der Zivilisation [The Civilizing Process], which was published obscurely in 1939, all his other books and most of his essays were published after his formal retirement. These personal (...) date from that last highly productive part of his life, when he gradually attracted an extensive international following. They depict his foibles, some endearing, some that seemed perversely to stand in the way of his growing reputation. (shrink)

The origins and evolution of bioethics: Some personal reflections.Edmund D. Pellegrino - 1999 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 9 (1):73-88.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Origins and Evolution of Bioethics: Some Personal ReflectionsEdmund D. Pellegrino (bio)AbstractBioethics was officially baptized in 1972, but its birth took place a decade or so before that date. Since its birth, what is known today as bioethics has undergone a complex conceptual metamorphosis. This essay loosely divides that metamorphosis into three stages: an educational, an ethical, and a global stage. In the educational era, bioethics focused (...)

    Differential Emotions Theory as a Theory of Personality Development.J. A. A. Abe - 2015 - Emotion Review 7 (2):126-130.
In The Face of Emotions, which was Carroll Izard’s first major attempt at elaborating his differential emotions theory, he stated that the book “presents a theoretical framework for the study of emotions and their role in personality and interpersonal processes.” Yet, over the years, his contribution to personality theory has generally been overshadowed by the attention focused on his views on facial expressions and the structure of emotions. This article will begin with a brief overview of the DET perspective on (...)

Identity, inference, and recollection in COME.Paisley Nathan Livingston - unknown
Samuel Coleridge once noted that very short works of art ease the cognitive burden on poet and reader alike. Limiting the number of lines in a poem, he contends, allows the work 'to acquire, as it were, a Totality' which allows the reader's mind to 'rest satisfied'. Anyone who has strained to grasp the overall pattern of some massive novel, film, or musical work can readily appreciate Coleridge's point. And yet insofar as a film or poem is a temporal (...)

Eminent psychologists were asked to reflect on their work and discuss the basic tenets of beliefs of their psychologies and how they arrived at them. The result is this fascinating collection. Contributors discuss subject matter for psychology, what findings they are most certain of, the best methods to study research problems, and what direction the field will take in the future.

    Some Persons in Plutarch's Moralia.G. W. Bowersock - 1965 - Classical Quarterly 15 (02):267-.
Plutarch of Chaeronea was a voluminous writer whose experience of the Graeco-Roman world of his own day was quite as comprehensive as his knowledge of earlier ages. The ancient historian is often daunted by the sheer bulk of Plutarch's work and prefers customarily to concentrate his attention upon the Lives, which, if not history, at least contain much historical matter.

A brief historical overview of his career is presented. Izard’s differential emotions theory has exerted influence in a number of domains and disciplines. Illustrations are provided from research and prevention in developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology. Some Personal Notes on Role Plays as an Excellent Teaching Tool: Commentary on “Using and Developing Role Plays in Teaching Aimed at Preparing for Social Responsibility”.Iris Hunger - 2013 - Science and Engineering Ethics 19 (4):1529-1531.
Role plays are extremely valuable tools to address different aspects of teaching social responsibility, because they allow students to “live through” complex ethical decision making dilemmas. While role plays are getting high marks from students because their entertainment value is high, their educational value depends on their closeness to students’ work experience and the skills of the teacher in helping students comprehend the lessons they are meant to convey.

By the death, last summer, of Jack Robson, the world of utilitarian studies and a wider world of scholarship on both sides of the Atlantic lost one of their most distinguished figures. It would not be appropriate here, even if it were possible now, to attempt a full and measured assessment of his work. Writing only a few months after the news of his death, while the sense of loss is still so sharp for all his many friends, two things (...)

The work of Ezequiel Di Paolo and Hanne De Jaegher has helped to transform the enactive approach from relative obscurity into a hotly debated contender for the future science of social cognition and cognitive science more generally. In this short introduction I situate their contributions in what I see as important aspects of the bigger picture that is motivating and inspiring them as well as the rest of this young community. In particular, I sketch some of the social issues (...)

The task of Philosophy in Science (PinS) is to use philosophical tools to help solve scientific problems. This article describes how I stumbled into this line of work and then addressed several topics in philosophy of biology—units of selection, cladistic parsimony, robustness and trade-offs in model building, adaptationism, and evidence for common ancestry—often in collaboration with scientists. I conclude by offering advice for would-be PinS practitioners.

The following year we both, again, attended the commencement Mass but this time, were a little more aware of those who were attending. To (...)

In the fall of 1984 my wife, Georgia, and I, moved to Paterson and founded Holistic Ministries International. Our purpose was twofold: to develop a set of ministries that would manifest, in word and deed, the good news of the Kingdom of God; and to develop a context in which prospective missionaries, from Paterson and elsewhere, might receive training relevant to 21st century mission. How this has worked out is the subject of this article.
